On a busy week like this one, first and foremost a big thank you is in order for everybody who is helping with the church sale. Whether you brought donations, helped to price items, or worked the sale itself, thank you. Every year our rummage sale proceeds go to support the Muscatine CROP walk. If you don’t know the organization, it’s a sponsored ministry of the Church World Service.
CROP originally stood for the Christian Rural Overseas Program. It goes all the way back to 1947 when it began to help the hungry overseas by reaching them with grain from the Midwest. Today churches from all over the country sponsor walks, with the goal of raising money to help feed hungry across the globe. As the program evolved, 25% of proceeds are returned to fight local hunger, meaning that a quarter will return to support food security programs in Muscatine.
As a church whose weekly worship leads up to the Table, the notion of helping the hungry find something to eat takes on a deeper meaning. Just as Christ broke bread and told a story of Good News – a Story that wasn’t fully understood at first – so do we reach out to help those who are hungry. With physical food, we reach them; but in just the same way, the Church World Service is building relationships that center around telling the Story of an even deeper hunger that can be satisfied with Gospel.
In the coming months, CROP walks will be happening all across the country. Our own will be held on Sunday October 7thon the riverfront of Muscatine. A lot of the churches in town will be coming to walk, to remember that we are united in mission, and to remember those around the world who need daily bread.
